“As life begins, none of us arrive with a clean hard drive. We can think about it like we’re sharing an operating system with our parents and even our grandparents.” – Johanna Lynn
Today I’m excited to be re-sharing one of my all time favorite Become an Unstoppable Woman episodes: Intergenerational Trauma.
This episode is so relevant right now as we’re living in an age that’s really evolving and exploring so much relating to gender and race rights and history. If we really look closely at these groups that have been oppressed decade after decade, it’s no surprise that BIPOC, women, and many other groups can inherit trauma from their ancestors.
Because Intergenerational Trauma is all about epigenetics and the idea that trauma can be transferred from generation to generation.
We all learned from an early age that we inherit physical traits from our family. Does anyone else remember in science class learning about dominant and recessive traits?
But what you may not know is that newer research shows we also inherit our emotional patterns from relatives. These emotional patterns many times can be considered intergenerational trauma.
EVERY SINGLE PERSON needs to know about their intergenerational trauma as it can keep us from living our most fruitful and fulfilling lives.
In this episode, I interview Therapist Johanna Lynn, who’s an expert on the topic of epigenetics and intergenerational trauma. Johanna has dedicated her career to working with clients to uncover their inherited emotional patterns and learn how to release and overcome the traumas within.
Listening back to this episode, I am still completely blown away by the concepts that Johanna presents. We may think we’re born with a clean slate emotionally, but it’s just not true. As Johanna explains, we start with a lot of information already imprinted on us, like a hard drive. And this can impact us for our whole lives if we don’t uncover it.
JOHANNA EXPLAINS HOW INTERGENERATIONAL TRAUMA CAN:
- Show up in your marriage
- Affect your relationship as a parent to your child
- How having a lack-of a relationship with a member of your family can cause a ripple effect
…and so much more.
